Hello world!

Hi everyone, I've just signed up to try out Friendica and see what it's like. I've been thinking of setting up my own fediverse server (I used to run an independent forum many years ago before most people abandoned them to join Facebook) and think Friendica is the way to go. I'm already on Bluesky and Mastodon but I like the idea of something looking more Facebook-like rather than a Twitter-like interface.

I think the time is definitely right for people to jump aboard the fediverse. Certainly my Facebook friends are fed up of the algorithms constantly forcing shit they don't want to see on their feed when all they want to see is what their friends and family are up to. Plus the ridiculous, one-sided, unaccountable moderation by bots is annoying everybody too.

I've already left Musk's hellsite and I'm starting to make my first moves away from Facebook too. This looks like a lovely friendly and safe space, especially for our LGBTQI+ community, so I think I'll be staying. 🙂

Hello world!
@justkatie808 If it weren't for the fact I'd have to pay for a hosting service, I'd consider just making a server for any of my friends to go to that didn't want to hunt for one, but I'm not an IT whiz, so, probably not gonna happen.

When I set something up, I'll rent a VPS so I have full control of my server. I have used shared hosting for my forums, blogs etc in the past, but VPS is better for something like this.

I'll probably build a site and host it locally on a Linux box before going live with it. I'll probably self-fund it (and maybe accept donations) rather than host adverts etc. If the live site expands to the point where I do have to find ways of monetising it, then I'll have to rethink it, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it LOL.

@JustKatie808 @JustKatie808 Yeah--I think that's above my skill-set. LOL I'm reasonably tech savvy, but not THAT good.

I managed to leave facebook, after downloading all my pics! Its been a good experience, the only part I miss is the groups, local lgbtq groups because that is where they post events and meet-ups. :( Event info needs to make it to these platforms too, but I suppose we have to wait until the masses move over (I asked the group to consider re-posting elsewhere or creating an email list).
I too miss the early blog and forum worlds. Substack feels very much like (cant remember the name) my old blog reader. It's nice to see discussion and lengthier posts than on facebook or the mastodon-like instances I've been exploring. I dont miss the ads, and diluted facebook feed.
Anyway... Welcome. Maybe this Friendica place will kick off? I'm not sure if its a new ?server? or place or everyone is somewhere else. Kinda hard to know.

I keep getting this error message at the moment, which is making the site unusable for me.

I hope it gets resolved soon.
